Quality Policy:

It is the policy of B. P. Marine Academy to impart training, which will adhere to the legislative requirement, meet the National and International standards and the guidance from the industry codes wherever applicable. BPMA is committed to imparting this training in a consistent and concrete manner aiming at the satisfaction of the trainees in the area of their needs and requirements and that of the seafarers' employers.

Quality Objective:

The overriding philosophy of Total Quality Management (TQM) is the main objective of BPMA, which imparts quality training to seafarers.

  1. B. P. Marine Academy seeks to enhance the knowledge and skill of the trainees through a conducive and well-tailored learning environment to meet the needs of the Industry.
  2. B. P. Marine Academy will keep abreast of the current market and industry trends and endeavours to provide new courses after reviewing the demand for such courses or discontinuing courses.
  3. B. P. Marine Academy ensures that faculty members are upgraded in line with current requirements utilizing all available media such as the Internet, periodicals and magazines. The faculty members periodically undergo training (refresher / new courses) as required and whenever applicable.

These courses are conducted with the latest equipment and totally enclosed lifeboats confirming to latest SOLAS Regulations (Simultaneous Release System with On-Load Release). Exclusive handouts with Lunch/tea are provided to the candidates who undergo these courses. It is to our credit that over 1,25,000 (One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only) candidates have been trained for various courses during the last Ten years till March 2008.

 BPMA strictly follows the IMO Guidelines and Model Courses in training seafarers. In order to achieve the above requirement, BPMA has established and implemented a Quality System, complying with the International Standards (ISO 9001 : 2000).

The Academy has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 Management System Certification by ABS Quality Evaluations Inc. (Certificate No. 33713).

There are well qualified and devoted Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Academic and Instructional staff as faculty for all the subjects covered in the syllabus. In case of requirement of any specialised information to be provided to the candidates, experts from Shipping Industry from outside the college are requisitioned as visiting faculty. The course will be fully residential as per D. G. Shipping norms requiring all the trainees to stay in-house. The curriculum has been designed to impart integrated and comprehensive training as per the Standards of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and D. G. Shipping, Government of India.

The course will cover all the aspects of the sea-faring profession Deck Cadet / Engine Cadet / Deck & Engine / Saloon / which also include Swimming, Drill, Life Saving and Fire Fighting Exercises and Ship's Visits etc.

STCW'95 BASIC SAFETY COURSES

The following STCW'95 modular course will be covered in the Pre-Sea Training course of Deck Cadet / Engine Cadet / Electro Technical Officer/ GP Rating / Saloon Rating.

  3. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  4. Fire Prevention And Fire Fighting

These courses are conducted by the Academy for serving seafarers also. However for them, these courses are non-residential (Accommodation may be arranged for desirous candidates on extra payment)

Job Prospects

BPMA has tie up with one of the largest shipping company of the world (Peter Dohle managed by Dohle Danautic India Pvt. Ltd.). 85% of HND Deck Cadet / Engine Cadet has been placed in the above company. Other shipping companies also come to BPMA for the campus interviews. 90% of IGNOU Cadet and 75% of GP Rating / Saloon Rating boys has got placement in different shipping companies. The candidate who has not been selected in the campus on successful completion of respective Pre-Sea courses will qualify to take up employment as seamen aboard a ship of National or International Flag on their own. Due to vast increase in the sea transportation there is a great potential of job opportunities for seafarers both in Indian and Foreign Shipping companies as a crew member.

With further sea-service these Seamen (Rating) can be promoted as Seaman Helmsman, Able Body Seaman or Motorman and also to the officer's level subject to certain D. G. Shipping requirements. With respect to  a) Deck Cadet after completion of recomended sea service depend on course sr.no.1, 2, 4 they are allowed to appear for 2nd Mate (F.G) Exam. After successfully passing the same they will be recruited as 3rd Mate / 2nd Mate. After completion of required sea time in a phase manner they will be promoted as Chief Mate / Captain, after completion of respective exam. 
b)
 Engine Cadet after completion of recomended sea service depend on course sr.no.3 they are allowed to appear for Engineer Officer on Watch (EOOW) Exam. After successfully passing the same they will be recruited as 4th Engineer/ 3rd Engineer. After completion of required sea time in a phase manner they will appear for second engineer exam, after successfully passing the same they will be recruited as 2nd engineer. After completion of required sea time in a phase manner they will appear for Chief Engineer Exam and after successfully passing the same they will be recruited as Chief Engineer. The Academy shall assist the passed-out trainees in obtaining suitable jobs.

            The above eligibility criteria is applicable for candidates selected through entrance examination conducted by IGNOU.  However, for INSA / FOSMA / MASSA company sponsored candidates average of 60% in PCM and 50% in English language is required.

As the candidates with higher educational qualifications are given preference, Certificates to that effect may also be enclosed.

4. The completed application form should reach the Academy on or before the specified date in the advertisement, through Registered Post / Courier / Personally.

Original Certificates will have to be produced for verification at the time of admission / reporting.

Candidates are advised to report on same day of commencement of the course as per DGS Training Circular No. 24 of 2004 dated 13th September 2004 failing which the seat will be automatically allocated to the waiting list candidate (If Available) and the admission will be treated as cancelled and fees will be forfeited.

Mode of Selection

1. Upon collection and scrutinising the applications, the Selection Board of B. P. Marine Academy will issue call letters to the short listed candidates.

Candidates are short listed on the basis of marks obtain in the qualifying examination. Preference will be given to candidates with higher qualification and to the wards of serving / retired seafarers, subject to meeting the Eligibility Criteria. Copies of the Guardian's CDC will be considered authentic proof for justifying the claim.

2. Short listed candidates are advised to report at the Academy. The candidates have to undergo Test (Written or Oral) or both. They will be tested on the basis of their attitude and aptitude towards seafaring profession, ability to communicate in English, general comprehension and seafaring background, if any.

B. P. Marine Academy reserves the right to select or reject any candidate. The Selection Committee is not bound to call an applicant for interview or to assign any reason for rejection.

3. The candidates who qualify in the final test will have to undergo medical examination as per MS 2000 rules by a doctors appointed by D.G. Shipping. Selection will be confirmed only if the candidate is found to be medically fit for sea service.

4. Once declared medically fit candidates must take admission by paying his course fees, failing which the seat will be offered to the next candidate as per the merit list.

The above fees have to be paid in full by Demand Draft drawn in favour of "B. P. Marine Academy" payable at Navi Mumbai on any Nationalised Bank, at the the time of admission.

The fees once paid will not be refunded or transferred to any other candidate's account.

Due to any reason if the training is extended beyond the specified time, the candidates will have to pay extra charges as per the decision of B. P. Marine Academy.

Caution

Any suppression of truth, mis-representation of facts or submission of false Certificates will result in cancellation of admission, forfeiture of fees and shall be punishable as per the law. Fees once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.

CATERING BLOCK

The catering block is designed and equipped with modern and sophisticated gadgets on the lines of modern ships to give the trainees a realistic feeling of life on board as well as to impart practical training. The kitchen, bakery, cold rooms, pantries, sculleries and dry stores are constructed keeping in mind the needs of the shipping industry.

The kitchen is spacious and well furnished with all modern facilities and equipment e.g. latest electric, gas and steam cooking ranges, adjacent to a large bakery. The hygiene level maintained is of international standard.

The catering block has a large air-conditioned revolving cafeteria of a floor area of 4000 sq.ft. with an attached pantry. It has a seating capacity of 150 trainees at a time. This large executive dinning area is tastefully decorated with attractive waterfalls (at the entrance and at the top). The revolving cafeteria with its beautiful water fountain at the top, designed by a leading landscaping artist has become a landmark attraction and pride of Navi Mumbai.

Boarding and Lodging

Being a fully residential programme, hostel facilities for the candidates consist of well designed dormitories, Changing Rooms, Bathrooms etc. well designed with hygienic modern amenities. Mattresses, pillows, bed sheets and pillow covers will be supplied to each candidate on the date of joining for their use during the training. Food served is of mixed cuisine to help candidates to get accustomed to various types of food preparations. The diet is well balanced and the food is wholesome.

Laundary

Arrangements exist for washing clothes which are collected and delivered weekly at the candidate's expense.

Medical

BPMA will take necessary care about any emergencies. At the same time it is not responsible for any personal injury or any disease suffered by any trainee during their stay. Medical Assistance will be provided at the student's cost for their treatment.

RESIT

Resit Examination will be conducted every 3 months as per the schedule given by All India Open EXIT Examination for GP Rating and Maritime Catering.

For Deck Cadet ATKT system is followed as per the IGNOU guideline.

Removal from Academy for all Pre-Sea Courses

Cases of major indiscipline will be a cause for rustication from the Academy. Minor offences will be dealt by the Principal and warning letter sent to parents if considered necessary by the Principal.  

Rules and Regulations for all Pre-Sea Courses

  1. The standing rules and regulations of the Academy shall be binding on all students. This may be changed without prior intimation to the students.

  2. Gold ornaments or other valuable items or any kind of electrical apparatus are not allowed to be kept.

  3. Candidates are not allowed to keep more than about Rs. 500/- in cash with them. Excess cash should be deposited with the cashier and can be withdrawn in lots of Rs. 500/-.

  4. Uniform is to be worn at all times during training. Hence, very few civilian clothes are to be brought. Uniforms will be supplied within one week of joining.

  5. Candidates are permitted ' Shore leave' in uniform only on Sunday between 0700 and 2000 hours.

  6. Candidates are not allowed to stay out of the campus at night under any circumstances. Parents are instructed not to make any request for the same.

  7. Visitors are permitted only on Sundays between 1400 and 1700 hours.

  8. The use of tobacco and alcohol is strictly prohibited in the Academy.

  9. Long hair, moustaches and beards are not allowed during the period of training. Sikh candidates are exempted from this.

  10. The following are prohibited in the hostel

    · Fire arms of any kind
    · Knives
    · Pets or livestock of any description
